Sexism
Introduction
Today, in the 21st century, there is still a major sociological problem that plagues our society. It is called sexism.
The view of women and how they are perceived by men and the patriarchal society have changed a lot in the past century mostly, but are still problematic and need to further advance to a point where sexism is gone and men and women are treated and looked upon as equals, rather than of one dominant sex and another which is inferior and less important.
Women in the past
In past centuries, women were always regarded as inferior to men, as they had to stay at home, take care of the children and the house, be subordinate to the husband and do as he pleases. They didn't have their freedom to do what they want, to aspire to accomplish their true desires in life and to achieve self-fulfillment. They were housewives and their sole purpose in life was to please their man and do as he pleases. They essentially lacked basic rights and chained to the circumstances of their lives. They usually did not even get a say in who their husband is going to be, as their husband was chosen for them by their husband. They basically moved straight away from their father's house to their husband's house, never being truly free to do as they please.
In his apperception test, he described feelings of sadness, tiredness, frustration and hopelessness, with thoughts of suicide. He was referred to psychiatric evaluation, and started psychotherapy sessions, in which he articulated his belief that he wouldn't be able to have a relationship with a woman of his choice due to his having Down's syndrome. He enrolled in social programs for people with mental retardation and hasn't made anymore suicide attempts since. 1
